Comparing reducing state debt to federal debt
Ron DeSantis claims that he reduced Florida's debt by 25 percent, but can he do that at the federal level?
Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds, who endorsed Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis for president, in a post on X, touted his record cutting Florida's debt by 25 percent.
"The National Debt just hit $34 Trillion. @RonDeSantis has cut debt by 25% as Governor," she said. "That’s the leadership we need in Washington!"
That is certainly a commendable aspect to his record and shows a commitment to fiscal discipline as governor. Floridians are better off fiscally in the long run as the state pays down its debt.
The campaign talking point gives me a little heartburn, however, because I think it is an apples to oranges comparison.
